  4.     DIED. Nestor Almendros, 61, magician with a movie camera,
  5. whose cinematography illuminated films including My Night at
  6. Maud's, The Story of Adele H., Days of Heaven and Sophie's Choice;
  7. of lymphoma; in New York City. The son of a Loyalist who fled
  8. Spain after Franco took power, Almendros studied film in Rome,
  9. taught Spanish at Vassar, and made documentaries in the early
  10. days of the Castro revolution, until he lost his film-critic
  11. job for publishing subversive opinions. In the 1980s he
  12. co-directed two scalding films, Improper Conduct and Nobody
  13. Listened, that itemized the torture of homosexuals and other
  14. renegades in Cuba.
